Backpacking Checklist
I couldn't find a backpacking checklist online that I really liked, so I took some suggestions from several of them and added my own stuff. Listing an item as optional or not can be subjective, so it's only my opinion. The Ten Essentials are lifted straight off someone else's list.
*Stuff I'll almost always bring with me.

TEN ESSENTIALS
*Water Container     I carry a 100oz bladder and an empty Nalgene water bottle.
*Matches/Lighter
*Fire starter
*Compass and Map   *
*First-Aid Kit   *
Whistle     I guess this would be used for both warning bears of your presence and alerting rescuers. I don't have one.
*Nylon Rope   *
*Pocket Knife/Multi-tool
Emergency Blanket     Don't carry this on overnight trips since I already have a tent and bag.
Energy Bar
*Sunglasses
*Sunscreen   * You'll fry like an egg without it in the high country.
*Flashlight/Headlamp     A headlamp will probably weigh less and take up less space. It also frees up both hands.

BACKPACK & SLEEPING

*Tent & Stakes   *
*Sleeping Bag

*Stove   *
*Fuel   *
*Cooking Pot
Cup *   Cooking pot can also double as cup.
*Utensils     I only bring a spoon.
*"just add water" meals     Freeze-dried meals, ramen noodles, instant rice meals -- I tend to prefer the freeze-dried meals that you eat out of the bag to avoid dirtying my cooking pot.
*Coffee     Can't leave home without it.
*Trail Mix     This can be anything in a bag.
*Energy Bars *   Clif bars, etc. are good.

PERSONAL HYGIENE

Fishing Gear *
*Plastic trash bag   * For trash you can't burn.
